Great Marlin Bite

Report Date: November 25, 2015

There has been a great marlin bite going off Los Suenos, Costa Rica on over the past month of November. Blue, striped and even an occasional black marlin have been consistently showing up on an almost daily occurrence.

We have been averaging at least one shot per day from at least one of the 3 species of marlin found here. Many days have seen multiple bites from any combination of them, in addition to a few sailfish bites. Making it very possible to land a coveted Billfish "Grand Slam" - catching 3 different species of billfish on the same day. Several boats including, the EPIC, have released grand slams on fishing charters this month.

Catching marlins is what offshore fishing is all about. These fish respond well to teasers, they are tough, strong, exciting fish, and great to fight with lots of stamina and spirit.

Mahi-mahi (aka dorado) have been surprisingly scarce so far this year, which is typically peak time of the year for them. We have had a few decent gaffer sized mahi on various scattered days, but we should be catching several of them every day. Maybe they are just late showing up and could appear in the next couple months.

There still have been yellowfin tunas occasionally passing through several days this month, even though this is late season for them. The ones that get caught have been good sized too - many 80-120 pound tunas caught this month.

Sailfish numbers have been a bit spotty over the past couple months but the fishery seems to finally have started improving and mid-November should improve to double digit bites every day through December.
